How to Remove a Background from Any Image (and When AI Gets It Wrong)

Where it still fails, and the fixes

Subject ambiguity. Two people side by side, or a person holding a product: the model keeps both or guesses wrong. Fix: crop to your intended subject first, then remove the background.

Reflections and shadows. The cutout is clean but looks pasted-on because the new composition has no grounding shadow. Fix: composite onto the new background, then use prompt editing to add a consistent shadow — "add a soft natural shadow beneath the subject".

Wispy edges against similar colors. Blonde hair on a beige wall gives any model trouble. Fix: if you control the source photo, shoot against contrast; if not, expect minor edge cleanup.

The background IS the point. If you want to replace a background rather than delete it, skip the two-step entirely: describe the new scene in image-to-image and the model swaps it while keeping the subject grounded.
